Hyaluronic Acid - Ingredient in the spotlight

Hyaluronic Acid - Ingredient in the spotlight

Hyaluronic acid is an ingredient we're seeing more of in skincare products. This includes masks and serums as well as face creams.

My first exposure was in 2020, before my wedding. In the lead-up to the big day, I used a hydrating face mask at night that included hyaluronic acid, and I loved it. Because it's a naturally occurring ingredient, I wanted to know more.

Thank goodness for the internet!

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Don't be alarmed by the word acid. It's not a word that would usually make you think of natural skincare, but this is a good kind of acid. Your body naturally produces the gooey, gel-like substance, and it's mainly found in your skin, eyes and connective tissues.

This article from WebMD is a good summary of what hyaluronic acid is.

"Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the fluids in the eyes and joints. It acts as a cushion and lubricant in the joints and other tissues. Different forms of hyaluronic acid are used for cosmetic purposes. Hyaluronic acid might also affect the way the body responds to injury and help to decrease swelling."

How can hyaluronic acid help my skin?

As we age, increased exposure to pollutants such as ultraviolet radiation from the sun, tobacco smoke and air conditioning can cause our skin to lose volume, hydration and plumpness.

Adding a handmade natural skincare product that contains hyaluronic acid to your skincare routine can help your skin replace that lost moisture and vitality.

Hydrated skin can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, making skin appear smoother and reducing redness and inflammation.

The amazing thing about hyaluronic acid is that it works wonders for everyone, no matter what your skin type is. The benefits are outstanding if your skin is sensitive, breakout-prone, or has an oily complexion.

  • Attracts and holds moisture
  • Prevents breakouts
  • Speeds up wound healing
  • Defends against free radicals
  • Enhances natural barriers
  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improves skin tone
  • Reduces uneven pigmentation

The Facts:

  • Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it retains moisture. Interestingly, it can bind over one thousand times its weight in water.

  • The ingredient used in beauty and skincare products is primarily made by bacteria in a lab via a process called bio-fermentation. It can also be harvested from rooster's combs; however, the hyaluronic acid I choose to use is plant-based.

  • Magnesium is involved in hyaluronic acid production in the body.

  • Adding bone broth to your diet is a great way to increase your intake of hyaluronic acid. Foods such as soy products, oranges, almonds, kale, and sweet potatoes provide nutrients that may naturally ramp up your body's synthesis of hyaluronic acid.

A naturally occurring ingredient for your natural skincare routine

Now you can understand why I started to formulate it into my handmade skincare range earlier this year and why I'm excited to launch my hyaluronic acid night cream in Australia.

While hyaluronic acid can be used day or night, I decided to produce the Luxurious Night Cream so there's no chance of it interfering with your makeup, and it can work its magic while you sleep.
