The method also adds to the carbon footprint at the end-of-life for these capsules, due to the thick plastic packaging and transportation required to get to the processing plant for separating for recycling. Many consumers need to pay for packaging & postage to return them for recycling.
Aluminium Coffee capsules will not be recycled if they are loosely tossed into your kerbside recycling bin because items smaller than a tennis ball usually fall through the filters at the material recycling facilities (MRFs) and are sent to landfill. Plus, due to the coffee grounds inside (organic material), which will contaminate the load of recyclable items.
These issues make recycling less convenient, so most consumers simply toss them into the waste bin. This results in billions of coffee capsules ending up in landfill sites annually – producing methane, a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) contributing to the climate crisis.
