I designed our Gold Heart Necklace in August 2021. Allied troops had just pulled out of Afghanistan and the world watched in horror as the Afghani government fell to the Taliban. The dangers facing women and girls under Taliban rule were unimaginable and I desperately wanted to do something to help. I decided to make a special piece of jewellery as a dedicated fundraiser.
I looked online and discovered Women for Women International, a charity that had already been working in Afghanistan for 20 years. Their Conflict Response Fund allows them to provide fast support to at-risk women in times of volatility and crisis. They also run year-long empowerment programs for women in countries affected by war and conflict. They teach women literacy, numeracy and business skills and provide training in each woman’s chosen vocation. They provide resources and connections to enable women in the program to start their own businesses and form cooperatives. This increases their borrowing power so that together, they can access ongoing funds and keep their businesses growing sustainably.
I love this empowered approach. It establishes long-lasting positive change in women’s lives and it’s why I chose to partner with Women for Women International for my fundraising piece.
I designed our Gold Heart Necklace as the crisis in Afghanistan unfolded.
When l had the idea to create a fundraising piece, I instinctively though of the heart, that universal symbol of eternal love and unity.
I made it gold to represent abundance and courage. As the design unfolded, a diamond formed in the centre and an infinity symbol formed across the top. Diamonds are the strongest naturally occurring material in the world, and the infinity symbol represents limitlessness and eternity.
The design came together easily in one afternoon, as if I were guided by angels. It’s jam-packed with love, and it feels divine to wear.
